Boron tribromide, BBr3, is a colorless or primrose yellow, very volatile, irritant fuming liquid at normal temperature and is a strong Lewis acid. It dissolves in CCl4 and absorbs water from the air strongly. It reacts vigorously with water to form boric acid and hydrogen bromide, It is very corrosive and its vapor is toxic. It is easy to be decomposed in water and alcohol, etc. It can be decomposed to elements by heating up to 1300 °C. It is an excellent demethylating or dealkylating agent for ethers. It is a strong Lewis acid catalyst, reacts with alkaline to form adduct and complexes. It is corrosive and its vapour is toxic, stimulus to human.
Application:The electronic grade boron tribromide is used as P type dopant in integrated circuit, solar cell, semiconductor separation component etc., doping on crystal silicon by the thermal diffusion.
